#MyFrazerJonesJourney – Yana Ivanova
Yana is a HR recruitment specialist based in our New York office. She is focused on recruiting HR talent for financial services and professional services clients.
Yana, you joined Frazer Jones in July 2024 to support the growth of our financial services recruitment team in New York, what drew you to the opportunity?
There were a lot of factors that drew me to FJ! One was the ability to join an established business that was still in a period of growth here in the US. It’s the best of both worlds, being able to work in a business with an excellent global reputation and infrastructure while also being able to make an impact and put my stamp on the US business.
Another thing that really appealed to me was working with an amazing team of experienced recruiters who support one another’s growth and development. I love collaborating closely with a team and have had the best experience of this since joining FJ.
Prior to joining Frazer Jones in New York, you worked for a recruitment consultancy in London. What inspired you to move from London to New York?
One of the main reasons I decided to move from London to New York was to really push myself in a brand-new market. I’ve always been motivated by a challenge, and I loved the idea of building out a business in new space.
On a personal note, I lived in the US during high school and still have family here. It was a great opportunity to make a move closer to them and to explore living in one of the most exciting cities in the world.
And what are the key differences between the UK and US recruitment markets?
A huge difference in the US recruitment market is the incredibly fast pace – employees are hired at will here (just an offer letter rather than a formal employment contract) which means that both job moves, and recruitment processes can happen very quickly! I had to adjust my working style to balance working consultatively whilst also keeping up with the market.
Another interesting element is the importance of networking. Relationships are always important in recruitment, but I’ve noticed that networking within your industry/space is even more crucial here in the US – it’s all about building connections and being a go-to thought partner.
Since joining Frazer Jones in New York, what has been your most memorable moment?
One of my favorite parts of my role is hosting client roundtables and networking events – I love being able to connect outside of the office and really get to know our clients on a personal level. We hosted a networking event at the end of 2024 on a gorgeous rooftop overlooking the Empire State building. I’ve generally gotten used to working in NY and the incredible views but this was a real pinch me moment!

What advice do you have for recruiters wanting to make the switch the US?
Take the leap! There’s a ton of opportunity for recruiters here in the US with a massive market and incredible earning potential. Relocating can be a long process but be patient and make sure you ask as many questions as possible to keep yourself informed and prepared at each step. It’s not often a business is happy to sponsor your relocation so make the most of it!
On a practical note, speak to people who have made the move before and can provide tips on the best way to get set up/acclimatized once you arrive. The expat community is huge here and always happy to share advice.
